What is your memory of Centre Point Sabah?

Back in the 1990s, during our teenage years, Centre Point Sabah was our Imago. We’d go there quite often after school or on Saturday (Sundays were usually reserved for family).

Burger King

What is now Svez Sqi (the last I visited Centre Point, it’s the shoe shop Svez Sqi), was where Burger King was—at the ground floor, opposite the Information Kiosk (the kiosk is no longer there too, it is now Yoyo). Secondary school kids of the 90s loitered at Burger King in several big clusters eating french fries, and drinking Coke.

West End

It was very popular in our era but I had a hard time remembering the name (I had to ask my sister, who also had to ask a mutual friend). West End sold mostly surfing brand t-shirts like Rip Curl, Ocean Pacific and Billabong. Every teenage boy AND girl, wanted to have oversized surfing t-shirts. It was very expensive too – each was between RM 80 to RM 100+, and so because of the high price, there was a demand for counterfeits. We (the teenagers) had our own theory of checking the authenticity by looking at the side of the t-shirt—it’s only genuine if there are no side seams, was our theory. Later on in life, I found out that t-shirts without side seams are called tubular t-shirts—cheaper to make because less work to do (i.e. no need to stitch the sides).

Rock Shop

I think it was called Rock Shop (please correct me if I’m wrong). There was a small corner shop facing the main road that sold band t-shirts. We passed by the shop a lot because it was near the exit, but I probably had only been inside a few times. (Edit: I was later informed that the rock shop was called COMO).

Eaton’s

This popular book and stationery store was and still is one of the most popular one in town. Workbook (like Sasbadi), pencils, normal pen, special pen, Manila card, calculator, board games were all there. And you know what, they are also current with the technology—they have an e-commerce website now, and also accessible via Lazada and Shopee.
